Summary

Each culture has its own myths and legends, but only one is shared, and it is feared by all。

With Age of MythAge of Swords, and Age of War, fantasy master Michael J。 Sullivan riveted readers with a tale of unlikely heroes locked in a desperate battle to save mankind。 After years of warfare, humanity has gained the upper hand and has pushed the Fhrey to the edge of their homeland, but no farther。 Now comes the pivotal moment。 Persephone's plan to use the stalemate to seek peace is destroyed by an unexpected betrayal that threatens to hand victory to the Fhrey and leaves a dear friend in peril。 Humanity's only hope lies in the legend of a witch, a forgotten song, and a simple garden door。

I’m so excited to continue this series。 I hope what Raithe did wasn’t in vain。

I was torn about this being a 3 or 4 star book, so as usual I gave it the benefit of the doubt。 This book doesn't have anything major happening in it, just some time skips。 That is okay。 Not everything has to be larger than life, though it often helps。 We have some redemption arcs, backstories and people acting on things that aren't their best interest。 We have ghosts, witches, heroes and somewhat few or undefined villains。 My audiobook app only has the rest of the series in the dramatized versi I was torn about this being a 3 or 4 star book, so as usual I gave it the benefit of the doubt。 This book doesn't have anything major happening in it, just some time skips。 That is okay。 Not everything has to be larger than life, though it often helps。 We have some redemption arcs, backstories and people acting on things that aren't their best interest。 We have ghosts, witches, heroes and somewhat few or undefined villains。 My audiobook app only has the rest of the series in the dramatized version。 They actually whisper the whispering and put on background noise which can make what is being said unclear。 Seems I won't continue this series unless a regular version comes a long。 Or I buy it at some point。 We'll see。 。。。more

These keep getting better。 The cliffhanger ending was insane, so I'm glad I could simply go and get "Age of Death" off the coffee table from when I visited the library yesterday。 These keep getting better。 The cliffhanger ending was insane, so I'm glad I could simply go and get "Age of Death" off the coffee table from when I visited the library yesterday。 。。。more

3。5 StarsAge of Legend was a solid overall read, and the series as a whole is very well written。 There are many characters in this installment that I really enjoyed, especially Gifford。 His love for Roan is special and it is impossible not to root for him。 We don't get to see much from Persephone, which I was ok with as after what happened in the last book, as she has soured with me somewhat。 After the events in Age of War, she seems to have shrunk in regards to her character。 Maybe I'm perceivi 3。5 StarsAge of Legend was a solid overall read, and the series as a whole is very well written。 There are many characters in this installment that I really enjoyed, especially Gifford。 His love for Roan is special and it is impossible not to root for him。 We don't get to see much from Persephone, which I was ok with as after what happened in the last book, as she has soured with me somewhat。 After the events in Age of War, she seems to have shrunk in regards to her character。 Maybe I'm perceiving this incorrectly, but it just seemed she wasn't the same person as earlier in the series。 Especially with one critical decision that basically drove the plot of the whole book。 I don't understand after becoming such a loved and competent leader how she made such a dumb decision。 "People always believe their problems are the worst and the rest of the world has it easier, but that cannot be true。 Someone has to be wrong。。。 right?" Now in regards to the plot, it was a little lacking。 There were two main things that occurred, one with Suri, and one with Tressa。 I would say around 65% of the book was directed towards the plot regarding Tressa, which was actually the more interesting of the two。 The issue was that it took a couple hundred pages for the characters involved to really actually do anything, and as many other reviews point out, it ends on quite the cliffhanger, which I was actually perfectly ok with。 I just wish the plot moved to the end much quicker, as the last section was full of palpable tension and also revealed a decent amount about certain characters and the world-building to boot。 The end was good, it was just the means to get there that seemed a little weak。 "What a strange treasure is innocence, a virtue to the old and a curse to the young, so highly prized but eagerly parted with-- the riches of beautiful skin traded for the wisdom of calluses。" A major theme in this series is innocence lost, between Suri growing from a young, wandering teenager to a powerful, broken adult, Tesh watching his whole family butchered by the Fhrey, Roan and Gifford struggling as outcasts, and even Pesephone in ways, as she gives up what she wants, for what she thinks is right。 Tesh is definitely a character that has become somewhat morally grey, and this ambiguity continues in this installment。 There were moments that felt painful in regards to his moral compass。 That being said, I think it is realistic that not all the 'good' characters are pillars of perfection when it comes to morality。 It is more believable that some of these characters would harbor some anger and resentment, seeping its way into the cracks of their virtues。 On the other hand, so many of the characters have experienced so much hurt, and yet we still have characters like Gifford, smiling back at the world who mocks him。 Sullivan truly writes some very lovable characters, and this is what will keep me coming back to his writing。 。。。more

Not straying to far from the previous books of the series, Sullivan goes on in what is now the tone of this series。 Three or four main threads involving all of the characters we learned to love in another development in the dispute between Rhunes and the Fhreys。 Sullivans' writing is as usual straighforward, focusing on the story and subtly developing his characters。 A few 'forgotten' players take a mayor role in this book and we find more about a mysterious character。 Also, another facet of the Not straying to far from the previous books of the series, Sullivan goes on in what is now the tone of this series。 Three or four main threads involving all of the characters we learned to love in another development in the dispute between Rhunes and the Fhreys。 Sullivans' writing is as usual straighforward, focusing on the story and subtly developing his characters。 A few 'forgotten' players take a mayor role in this book and we find more about a mysterious character。 Also, another facet of the world is revealed and a very interesting one。 Looking forward to what will happen next and if The Door will open。 。。。more

It's been a while since I've enjoyed every single character in a book。 There's significantly less action than the previous books on the series, but this book is as good as the previous ones since we get to see new alliances, put a lot in faith, done characters will shine while others will be"benched"。I think I mentioned this on the comments of the previous books, Sullivan is masterfully propelling the story, where each character each small detail in the previous books matters in the next。 It's been a while since I've enjoyed every single character in a book。 There's significantly less action than the previous books on the series, but this book is as good as the previous ones since we get to see new alliances, put a lot in faith, done characters will shine while others will be"benched"。I think I mentioned this on the comments of the previous books, Sullivan is masterfully propelling the story, where each character each small detail in the previous books matters in the next。 。。。more

Well, that was a disappointment。 Basically a long cobbled-together pastiche of what happens to the main characters over the 5-6 years between the last book and the next one。 Everyone is as damaged and depressed as ever, and working at cross-purposes whenever possible。 The writing and editing is still fine, but I'm actually finding a lot of it downright tedious。 Well, that was a disappointment。 Basically a long cobbled-together pastiche of what happens to the main characters over the 5-6 years between the last book and the next one。 Everyone is as damaged and depressed as ever, and working at cross-purposes whenever possible。 The writing and editing is still fine, but I'm actually finding a lot of it downright tedious。 。。。more

Great read。 Just wish the author and his wife could back up a bit and just leave us readers alone with the story and the characters。 In this book we dont even have to flip the last page; it's just after the last sentence in the story; "Robin and I would like to thank you for 。。。" and I'm just like; who are these people? This book was almost as good as the others - almost。 I saw reviewers complain that "nothing happened," in this installment。 However, I think it's fair to say, "less happened。" This is still a great book, and I can't imagine stopping such a great series this far inwards。 This book ends on a cliffhanger, so super grateful the fifth book is waiting on my nightstand。 This book was almost as good as the others - almost。 I saw reviewers complain that "nothing happened," in this installment。 However, I think it's fair to say, "less happened。" This is still a great book, and I can't imagine stopping such a great series this far inwards。 This book ends on a cliffhanger, so super grateful the fifth book is waiting on my nightstand。 。。。more

Why this is a separate volume in the series really baffles me。 A whole book just to provide a (not very elaborate) setup for the next book。 This whole series should have been a trilogy。

As ever with Sullivan, this was great。 It's so much fun to return to the world origins and see the Fhrey and Dwarves and Elves at their origins。 Although the war of their peoples has raged on, many of our favourite characters remain involved。 In this book, I felt that the pacing was a little slower to start, but it was easy to get back into after quite a break between this and the previous, and by the end I was loving the mystery and the adventures our characters were on。 There's dragons, witche As ever with Sullivan, this was great。 It's so much fun to return to the world origins and see the Fhrey and Dwarves and Elves at their origins。 Although the war of their peoples has raged on, many of our favourite characters remain involved。 In this book, I felt that the pacing was a little slower to start, but it was easy to get back into after quite a break between this and the previous, and by the end I was loving the mystery and the adventures our characters were on。 There's dragons, witches, death pools to the underworld and more。 The magic Art allows so many types of magic and the Fhrey now have their own wielder。 The pursuit of peace is a large part of the plot for this one with Persephone sending some of her best to try and work something out。 I think this is none of the more Fhrey-centric books in the series and so the Elves took a bit of a backseat to allow the Fhrey to shine。 I expect more from the Elves soon in the next book though as the climax for this one is pretty epic! 4*s and I've dived straight into the fifth one :) 。。。more

Michael Sullivan you are a truly evil man。 How could you end the book there? Fourth book of the Legends of the First Empire starts right after the battle in the last book。 The war has become a give and take of skirmishes。 The only thing I need to say is that you NEVER deliver yourself powerless into the hands of your enemies。

I'd give this a 4。5 as I want to give it a 5 but I found the beginning of the book a tad slow in hooking me in。 It didn't take long mind you。 Maybe a hundred or so pages, but still。 I'm glad I bought the next book already as I'll be jumping into that momentarily。 I'd give this a 4。5 as I want to give it a 5 but I found the beginning of the book a tad slow in hooking me in。 It didn't take long mind you。 Maybe a hundred or so pages, but still。 I'm glad I bought the next book already as I'll be jumping into that momentarily。 。。。more

The more I read of this series, the more I want to know more。 The world creation with the well thought out history of the people of the land is compelling。 The story is fun and interesting。 The characters are endearing while the villains make me so angry that I want to stop reading。 These are a few reasons why I’m getting drawn into this series。

It took me a while to read this book。 I'm not sure why, but while I enjoyed it, I wasn't engrossed in it。 There was no drive to reach the end。 It was fun, but mostly because I was familiar with the characters and I was okay with staying along with them for the journey, wherever it took us。 It took me a while to read this book。 I'm not sure why, but while I enjoyed it, I wasn't engrossed in it。 There was no drive to reach the end。 It was fun, but mostly because I was familiar with the characters and I was okay with staying along with them for the journey, wherever it took us。 。。。more

Wow, Michael J。 Sullivan really knows how to write a cliffhanger! I read the last 3 books in this series in about three days so I don't really remember what exactly happened in this one, but I remember the ending。 The scene with Roan and Gifford almost made me cry。 I just couldn't wait to see what would happen next。 Wow, Michael J。 Sullivan really knows how to write a cliffhanger! This series has a different feel than the other series。 I'm enjoying it。 However, the prior series hooked me at the beginning and gave me a ride。 Each book in this series has start slow and built。 I normally get hooked about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the book。 That's when I can't stop listening。 This series has a different feel than the other series。 I'm enjoying it。 However, the prior series hooked me at the beginning and gave me a ride。 Each book in this series has start slow and built。 I normally get hooked about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the book。 That's when I can't stop listening。 。。。more

I am rarely a person to comment on a book I read。 Oftentimes I don't think my opinion on a given book matters BUT for all of my friends reading this。 This author will forever be one I will buy without any ounce of hesitation。 His world-building is just so gripping and involved, every little detail is taken care of。 This series is right now my #1, granted I might be on a book-high but taking into account that it dethrones another of his series, I think it´s fair to say, that it´s a good indicator I am rarely a person to comment on a book I read。 Oftentimes I don't think my opinion on a given book matters BUT for all of my friends reading this。 This author will forever be one I will buy without any ounce of hesitation。 His world-building is just so gripping and involved, every little detail is taken care of。 This series is right now my #1, granted I might be on a book-high but taking into account that it dethrones another of his series, I think it´s fair to say, that it´s a good indicator for a great book series。 。。。more
